Where should you stay around Etosha?
Two decisions do most of the work: which part of the park you want to be near, and what kind of place you want to sleep in. Get those right and the shortlist is short.
Inside the fence there are only the government rest camps and their campsites, and they are the only way to be at a floodlit waterhole after dark. Outside the gates you get more room for your money, and further out you get guest farms, town guesthouses and hotels that work best as a night on either side of the park.
Staying inside the park
- Dawn and dusk at the waterholes without a gate run
- Floodlit waterholes a short walk from your room or pitch
- Rest camps and their campsites are the only option inside
Staying outside the gates
- More space and a better room for the same money
- Private reserves allow night drives and guided walks
- You lose the first and last hour of light to the drive
For one or two nights, being inside the park or immediately at a gate is usually worth paying for. Over a longer trip, mixing a night or two inside with better value outside tends to work better than doing either for the whole stay.
About accommodation around Etosha
This is the full directory of accommodation in and around Etosha National Park, bringing together lodges, campsites, guest farms, guesthouses and hotels in one place so you can compare options across the whole park rather than searching area by area. Properties range from rest-camp rooms and campsites inside the park at Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni, to private lodges just outside the gates, and further-flung guest farms and town guesthouses in gateway towns such as Outjo, Kamanjab, Tsumeb and Otjiwarongo for those breaking up a longer drive. Where you should base yourself depends largely on which gate you plan to use and how much time you have: staying inside the park keeps you close to early-morning and late-afternoon game viewing, while a gateway town works better if you are arriving late or combining Etosha with other regions. Use the filters to narrow results by location or accommodation type, or browse our individual location guides for Okaukuejo, Namutoni, Halali and the other areas listed for more detail on each. For planning help, see our Etosha info and self-drive guide pages.

How to narrow it down
- First decisionInside or outside the parkInside means rest camps and campsites, and waterholes after dark. Outside means more choice and usually a better room for the money.
- Second decisionWhich gateAndersson in the south, Von Lindequist in the east, Galton in the west, King Nehale in the north. Your gate decides your area.
- Third decisionWhat kind of placeLodge, tented lodge, campsite, guest farm, guesthouse or hotel. Each one trades comfort, price and proximity differently.
- ThenHow many nightsTwo nights is enough for one gate. Three or more is worth splitting between two areas rather than driving across the park each day.
