Tsumeb is a historic mining town in north-eastern Namibia and the main service centre for visitors approaching Etosha through Von Lindequist Gate and the Namutoni area. It has a fuller range of shops, fuel stations, banks and medical facilities than the smaller towns nearer the park, which makes it a sensible base if you want proper amenities close by, or a good place to restock before several days inside the park. The town's mining history is reflected in its museum and in the wider Otavi Mountain Land area, giving visitors a change of pace from wildlife-focused activities if they are staying more than one night. Guesthouses and hotels in Tsumeb tend to suit travellers who value comfort and convenience over being right on the park boundary, with the drive to Namutoni taking roughly an hour depending on road conditions. Tsumeb also works well as a base for exploring the eastern Etosha region across several days, using it as a fixed point rather than moving accommodation each night. For an overview of eastern gate options, see our Etosha info page, and compare with staying inside the park at Namutoni for earlier gate access.
