Kalkfeld is a small settlement on the B1 corridor roughly midway between Windhoek and Otjiwarongo, and this area term is used specifically for Mount Etjo Safari Lodge and the private Okonjati Game Reserve rather than for Otjiwarongo town itself. The lodge lies around 41 km along the D2483 gravel road, which turns off the B1 National Road south of Otjiwarongo, placing it firmly on the Windhoek-to-Otjiwarongo leg of a central Namibia itinerary rather than on the Otjiwarongo-to-Etosha leg. It is not an Etosha-gate property: the drive to Etosha's southern gates typically takes over two hours, so a stay here is best thought of as a distinct central Namibia safari experience in its own right, combined with an Etosha itinerary rather than used as a direct overnight stop before or after the park. Okonjati is a long-established private reserve known for its rhino and lion conservation work, and suits self-drive visitors wanting a private-reserve game-viewing stop between Windhoek and the north, or those combining central Namibia with Etosha and the wider Otjiwarongo/Waterberg region. For general route planning between Windhoek, Otjiwarongo and Etosha, see our self-drive guide, and compare with Otjiwarongo Area if you want a base directly on the main B1 route to the park.
