Where to Stay in Outjo Before Etosha

Outjo is the last small town on the tarred road to Andersson Gate. Most people pass through it in twenty minutes; a night here shortens the next morning to almost nothing.

Should you stop in Outjo?

Outjo is closer to Andersson Gate than Otjiwarongo is, which is its whole argument. Sleeping here means a short run to the gate and being inside the park while the light is still good, instead of spending the first hour of the day on tar.

Against that, it is a small town with a narrower choice of places to stay and fewer services than Otjiwarongo. The usual pattern is to handle fuel, cash and the big shop in Otjiwarongo and treat Outjo as the final top-up and, if the timing suits, the last bed outside the park.

These sit in and around Outjo on the southern approach. They are a stop before the park rather than a base for game drives inside it.

Onward to Etosha

From Outjo the road runs north to Andersson Gate on tar, which is why this is the busiest way into the park. It is a short leg, so the decision that matters is what time you leave rather than how long it takes.

Once through the gate, Okaukuejo Rest Camp is a short drive on, and the gate-area lodges sit on the roads immediately outside. Plan the arrival around the official park and camp gate times for your travel dates.
