Outjo is a small service town roughly south of Andersson Gate, and for most self-drive visitors coming from Windhoek it is the last proper town before entering Etosha National Park. It is a practical rather than glamorous stop: fuel, supermarkets, banks and vehicle repairs are all available here, which makes it a sensible place to stock up on supplies and top up your tank before the drive north to the gate. A number of guest farms, guesthouses and lodges have grown up around Outjo to serve travellers who prefer to break the journey overnight rather than driving straight through from the capital, and several also offer their own game drives and activities away from the busier park camps. Staying in Outjo suits those arriving late in the day, families wanting a comfortable overnight stop, or anyone wanting a cheaper base slightly outside the park before continuing to Okaukuejo the next morning. The road between Outjo and Andersson Gate is tarred.
