Otjiwarongo is one of northern Namibia's larger towns, sitting on the main B1 highway roughly between Windhoek and Etosha, which makes it a natural overnight stop for travellers driving up from the capital before continuing to Andersson Gate the following day. It has a wider range of shops, fuel stations, banks and restaurants than the smaller towns closer to the park, so it suits visitors who want proper facilities before heading into more remote areas. The area is also known for cheetah conservation work carried out nearby, giving guests an easy opportunity to learn about Namibia's predators before their safari begins. Guest farms and lodges around Otjiwarongo range from working cattle and game farms offering their own wildlife drives to straightforward hotels aimed purely at breaking up a long drive. Because Otjiwarongo is still around two hours or more from the park gates, it works best as a first- or last-night base rather than a springboard for daily Etosha game drives. For help planning the wider route north, see our self-drive guide, and consider Outjo as a closer alternative if you want to shorten the final approach to the park.
