Where to Stay in Otjiwarongo on the Way to Etosha

Otjiwarongo is the last full-service town on the B1 before the turn west for Etosha. It carries the broadest choice of accommodation on the southern approach, and it is where most self-drive trips do their last real restock.

Should you stop in Otjiwarongo?

The honest answer depends on what time you left Windhoek. Otjiwarongo is roughly the point where a single-day run to the gate stops being comfortable, so it earns a night when you have landed that morning, when you are travelling with children, or when you would otherwise arrive at Andersson Gate late in the day with no margin.

It is also the practical choice rather than the scenic one. This is a working town with fuel, supermarkets, banks and vehicle workshops, and it is the last place on this road where all of those are easy to find. If something needs sorting before the park — a tyre, a cool box, cash — sort it here.

If you left early and everything is in order, driving on to Outjo or straight to a gate-area lodge is perfectly reasonable. The accommodation here is broad rather than remarkable, and its value is logistical.

Where to stay in Otjiwarongo

These sit in and around Otjiwarongo, from town guesthouses to guest farms and lodges on the surrounding roads. They are a stop on the way to Etosha rather than a base for game drives in the park.

Using the town

Otjiwarongo has fuel, supermarkets, banks and vehicle workshops, which makes it the natural place to deal with anything you do not want to discover once you are inside the park. Buy drinking water, snacks and anything you want for the camp braai here rather than assuming you will find it further north.

Opening hours and what any given business stocks change, so treat this as a category rather than a promise, and check anything time-critical for the day you actually travel.

Onward to Etosha

The usual continuation is west and north through Outjo to Andersson Gate, which is tarred the whole way and is why most first Etosha visits enter from the south. Outjo is the last small town on that leg and works as a final stop rather than an overnight.

If your trip is running anti-clockwise you can instead stay on the B1 north through Otavi and Tsumeb for Von Lindequist Gate in the east. That is the longer road to the park but the shorter one if you are continuing towards the Kavango afterwards.
