The Dolomite area covers Etosha's western reaches, accessed through Galton Gate, and is one of the least visited parts of the park simply because it sits furthest from the main southern and eastern entrances. This remoteness is exactly its appeal: fewer vehicles, quieter waterholes and a landscape of dolomite hills and mopane woodland that looks noticeably different from the flat pans further east. Access has historically been more restricted than the rest of the park, with some areas reserved for guests staying at the lodges inside this section, so it suits travellers who have booked accommodation here in advance rather than casual day visitors. Because of the distance involved, most people treat a stay in the Dolomite area as a dedicated leg of their trip rather than a quick stopover, often combining it with Kamanjab or Khorixas on the way in or out. Accommodation is limited to a small number of lodges and camps rather than a large rest camp, which keeps the area feeling exclusive. Check current park and gate information before planning a self-drive route here, and see our self-drive guide for general route planning around Etosha.
