Should you stop in Grootfontein?
Grootfontein earns a night when you are arriving from the far north-east and the drive to the gate would otherwise run long. It is the first proper service town on that road, and it puts the eastern entrance within an easy morning rather than a push.
If you are coming up the B1 from Windhoek it is a detour, and Otjiwarongo or Tsumeb will suit better. The town also sits close to the Hoba meteorite, which gives an arrival afternoon or a departure morning something to do.

Onward to Etosha
The route runs west to Tsumeb and then on to Von Lindequist Gate for eastern Etosha. Tsumeb is the fuller service town of the two, so if there is shopping still to do it makes sense to do it there rather than here.
Plan the last leg around the official park and camp gate times for your travel dates. Inside the park the roads are gravel and slower than the tar on this approach.
