Grootfontein lies north-east of Etosha and is better known as a gateway to Namibia's Kavango and Zambezi regions than as a direct Etosha base, but it remains a useful overnight stop for travellers approaching the park from that direction or heading onward after visiting Namutoni. As one of the larger towns in this part of the country, it offers a fuller range of shops, fuel and basic services than the villages closer to the park itself. The surrounding area is largely agricultural, with guest farms offering a more rural, working-farm experience alongside straightforward guesthouses aimed at through-travellers. From Grootfontein, Von Lindequist Gate and the Namutoni area are still a reasonable drive away, so this is better suited to travellers combining Etosha with a longer northern Namibia itinerary than those wanting to be close to the park gates every day. It can also suit visitors flying into the region and needing a first night's stop before starting their Etosha self-drive the next morning. For route planning between the northern regions and Etosha, see our self-drive guide, and consider Tsumeb as a closer alternative nearer the eastern gate.
