Is a guest farm right for you?
A guest farm is a working or former farm that takes guests: farmhouse or chalet rooms, home cooking, and the farm itself as the setting. None are inside Etosha, and most are a real drive from a gate, so a guest farm is usually the night before or the night after the park rather than the base you drive from each morning.
What you get instead of gate proximity is space, quiet and activities the national park does not allow - guided walks, horse riding and small private game drives on the farm’s own land.
What you get
- A rural setting, and far fewer people than the rest camps
- Home-cooked meals, often eaten with the owners
- Walks, riding and private game drives that are not possible inside the park
What you give up
- Usually too far from a gate for early-morning game drives
- Facilities vary widely, from simple farmhouse rooms to lodge standard
- Activities and dinner often need booking in advance rather than on arrival
If your priority is being at a waterhole at first light, a rest camp or a gate-area lodge will serve you better. A guest farm is the stronger choice for the first or last night of an Etosha trip.
About guest farms around Etosha
Guest farms are working or former farms, mostly in the countryside around Outjo, Otjiwarongo, Kamanjab and Omaruru, that have added guest accommodation and often their own wildlife activities alongside the property’s original farming operation. They suit travellers who want a slower, more rural pace either side of their time in Etosha itself, combined with activities such as guided walks, horse riding or small private game drives that are not available inside the national park. Because most guest farms sit some distance from the park gates, they work well as a first or last night’s stay when travelling to or from Etosha, or as an extra stop if you are exploring wider northern Namibia rather than heading straight to the park. Facilities and style vary widely, from simple farmhouse rooms with home-cooked meals to more polished lodge-style guest farms with pools and multiple activities, so it is worth checking what each property actually offers around its wildlife or farm experience. Many are family-run, which often means a more personal welcome than at larger lodges. See our Outjo, Otjiwarongo and Kamanjab area guides for guest farms grouped by location, and our self-drive guide for route planning.
Choose a guest farm by area
Guest farms sit in the farming country south and east of the park rather than on its boundary, so the area you pick usually follows your route rather than your gate.

- DistanceHow far from a gateMost guest farms are an hour or more from the nearest gate. Read the distance the property publishes and plan the park day around it.

- MealsWhat is includedDinner is often a set menu at a shared table and needs to be booked. Check whether meals are included before comparing nightly rates.
- ActivitiesWalks, riding and farm drivesFarm activities are the reason to choose one. Check what is actually offered, and whether it runs daily or on request.
