About Olifantsrus Campsite

Welcome to Olifantsrus Campsite, the newest addition to Etosha National Park. Nestled in the remote and untamed western section of the park, this camp offers a unique camping experience that brings you closer to the beauty of the African bush.

Located approximately 60 km from Galton Gate, 130 km from Okaukuejo, and 50 km from Dolomite Camp, Olifantsrus Camp allows you to immerse yourself in the wilderness while enjoying the comforts of a well-equipped campsite.

In this secluded part of the park, you’ll have the opportunity to encounter rare and elusive species such as black rhino and black-faced impala. The tranquility of the area provides a raw and authentic bush experience.

One of the highlights of Olifantsrus Camp is its state-of-the-art double-story hide overlooking a man-made waterhole. This hide offers unparalleled views and is particularly popular for observing elephants, which inspired the camp’s name.

Aside from the exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities, the campsite offers a range of amenities to enhance your stay. An information center provides valuable insights into the park’s ecosystem, while a kiosk offers refreshing drinks and light meals. A communal kitchen and well-maintained ablution blocks ensure your comfort throughout your stay.

Olifantsrus Camp features 10 spacious camp sites, accommodating a maximum of 8 people per site. Whether you’re traveling with family or friends, these sites provide ample space for a memorable camping experience.

Even day visitors are welcome to enjoy the camp’s picturesque picnic facilities, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing break in the heart of Etosha National Park.

Best Suited For

Olifantsrus Campsite suits experienced self-drive travellers and campers looking for a remote, less-visited part of Etosha, away from the busier central and eastern camps.

Location and Gate Access

Olifantsrus is in the western section of Etosha, around 60 km from Galton Gate, roughly 130 km from Okaukuejo, and about 50 km from Dolomite Camp, so it suits visitors specifically planning a western-side route rather than a quick stopover.

Practical Considerations

Campers should bring their own tents and camping equipment and plan fuel and supplies carefully, since this is a remote, more basic campsite compared to the main rest camps. Book ahead where possible.

Nearby Alternatives

If you want more facilities nearby, Dolomite Camp is the closest option, about 50 km away, or consider listings around Okaukuejo further east.

Location and Region

Olifantsrus Campsite lies in the remote western section of Etosha National Park, a section that was only opened to camping in recent years and remains quieter than the more established Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni camps further east. The camp is built on the site of a former elephant cull station, and a small hide overlooking a waterhole has been retained for game viewing. Because of its distance from fuel and supply points, self-drive guests should arrive with a full tank and sufficient food and water for the duration of their stay.

Getting There

Access to Olifantsrus Campsite is via Galton Gate on the western boundary of the park, roughly 60 km away, making it best suited to travellers already routing through Damaraland or Kaokoland rather than a first stop from the south. Guests entering from Okaukuejo should allow ample time for the roughly 130 km drive on park roads, which have lower speed limits and frequent wildlife crossings. As with all Etosha camps, gates close at sunset, so timing the drive to arrive well before dark is essential.
