ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

Etosha, the Great White Place, is regarded as one of the world’s great game parks and it is Namibia’s prime tourist attraction. It is the home of several rare and endangered species of game, including one of the largest populations of black rhino in the world, as well as thousands of antelope.  Situated a five hours’ drive from Windhoek, the park is easily accessible from the capital and a visit can be combined with the sightseeing of the other tourist attractions in the area.

OUTJO

The only town within the conservancy is Outjo.  It is located 110km from the gates of Etosha National Park and is a good place to supply yourself before heading into the park.  Medical facilities, a hospital, a clinic and private doctors are available as well as a fully stocked pharmacy.  There are a number of shops that can supply groceries or equipment.  There is an OK supermarket and the Outjo Bakery is renown for its pastries and cakes.  There are several souvenir gift shops in town.

The trader Tom Lambert established the town in 1880.  It was rather a latecomer by southern African standards and unlike many other towns in the area; it never served as a mission station.  In the mid-1890s, it served as a German garrison town, but it did not see enough trouble to earn itself much of a place in history.

The places of interest to visit are:

The Naulila Monument is located next to the post office commemorates German losses  to the Portuguese on 19 October 1914 near Fort Naulila on the Kunene River in Angola.

The Franke House built  in 1899.  The building, originally called Kliphuis, now houses the Outjo Museum, which contains exhibits outlining the town’s political and natural history.

Near the Etosha Garden Hotel is an old stone windmill tower, which in 1900 was used to provide fresh water for the hospital and the German forces.
